Coming to art therapy is similar to seeing any other therapist - I'll begin by getting a lot of relevant information from you that will help me get to know you and understand what's been going on. I'll send you a lot of paperwork to fill out & our first session (called "intake") will mostly be going over everything together and coming up with goals of what you would like to get out of art therapy and how often you want to come.
Common art therapy goals include increasing positive emotions, increasing self-awareness, increasing self-esteem, increasing mindfulness practices, decreasing stress/anxiety, and learning new coping skills (to name a few basics).
We will probably talk about your experience and comfort level with art and different art materials during the intake session, and in sessions after that I will most likely "meet you where you are at" with the art materials, so we can stay in your comfort zone as we get to know each other.
After that I can begin to offer different art therapy directives that meet certain goals, and we may have some sessions where we leave the directive behind so we can process things in the moment.
I feel that one of my biggest strengths as an art therapist is being able to be fully present with my clients, allowing them to feel fully seen, heard, and supported.
I offer individual sessions for ages 13 and up (yes, adults can do art therapy too!).
Part of my goal in starting my own private practice was to make art therapy ACCESSIBLE - this means building awareness for art therapy AND offering it in an accessible, affordable way. Below is my sliding scale rates for individual sessions based on your income.
